Victoria’s pill testing service moves from trial to permanent harm reduction.
Since mid?2025, Victoria’s pill testing (drug checking) program has gone from a limited trial to a permanent, statewide harm reduction service.
The fixed site pill testing service at 95 Brunswick Street, Fitzroy opened in August 2025, offering free, confidential testing from Thursday to Saturday. Run by Youth Support and Advocacy Service, The Loop Australia and Harm Reduction Victoria, the Fitzroy site is close to nightlife, public transport and health services, and has already detected dangerous substances including synthetic opioids like nitazenes and issued multiple public alerts.
Alongside the fixed site, Victoria’s mobile pill testing service has operated at major festivals and events across the state, building on the successful trial at Beyond the Valley. Thousands of samples have been tested, with many people choosing to change their plans such as taking a smaller dose or deciding not to use a substance at all, after speaking with health workers.
On the back of strong results and community demand, the Victorian Government has now approved pill testing as an ongoing service, recognizing it as a key part of the state’s health led harm reduction approach. While no drug use is risk free, pill testing gives people better information, supports safer choices and helps authorities spot new, dangerous substances early.
